United Kingdom and European Union 3G Sunset Impact on
your 4G Devices

3G cellular networks are being shut down in GB and EU

Software configuration changes may be necessary

In the United Kingdom and European Union, some 4G-LTE devices may no longer attach to the cellular network after their 3G network sunset. Software configuration changes are required by the cellular module used in these devices to help avoid a service disruption.

Customers are most likely to experience service disruptions in one of the following use cases:

• SIM card is a single IMSI with only one wireless network operator

• SIM card requires a username and password to authenticate

• Local 3G network is already sunset or will soon be sunset

Device is setup to operate in LTE only mode

Gateways using the mPower operating system

Starting in April 2024, select Conduit gateways will include an updated version of the mPower operating system designed to make these software configuration changes and avoid service disruptions. The PCN notes the manufacturing dates and instructions to update the software.

Alternatively, MultiTech provides custom applications to make the software configuration changes. Please view “Custom Application Product Change Notification (PCN)” for more information.

Custom applications are for use with select versions of the mPower™ operating system used in Conduit gateways:

• mPower 6.3.0, mPower 6.3.1, mPower 6.3.2

• mPower 6.0.0, mPower 6.0.1, mPower 6.0.2, mPower 6.0.4

• mPower 5.3.8s-s1

Terminal Devices using AT Commands

Cellular modules can be controlled via the serial interface using standard AT Commands. The AT Commands in the PCN should be used to communicate directly with the cellular module or added to the host application to make the configuration changes necessary to avoid service disruptions.

What to do if you are experiencing connectivity issues post 3G sunset and you have implemented the changes? Based on direct customer feedback we suggest asking your carrier account representative the following questions when troubleshooting connectivity issues post-3G sunset.
  • Is my service still active?
  • Does my SIM have LTE enabled?
  • Is my device IMEI linked to a 3G account?
