BACnet MSTP

BACnet MS/TP (Master-Slave/Token Passing) is a BACnet physical and data link layer that operates over RS-485 serial networks and is commonly used in legacy and cost-sensitive building automation deployments.

MS/TP networks rely on token passing to control communication between devices and are widely found in field-level controllers for HVAC, lighting, and other building systems.

MultiTech plays an important role in modernizing these environments by acting as a bridge between MS/TP-based systems and IP-based building networks. Using MultiTech gateways, data from wireless LoRaWAN® sensors or IP-connected systems can be integrated upstream into BACnet/IP controllers that interface with existing MS/TP networks. This allows integrators to extend and enhance legacy BACnet MS/TP installations without replacing installed controllers, enabling new sensing capabilities and expanded visibility while preserving existing infrastructure investments.
