Device Discovery

Device Discovery in BACnet is the process by which building controllers and management systems automatically locate and identify devices on the network using standardized Who-Is / I-Am services. This mechanism allows BACnet systems to detect new devices, assign communication relationships, and simplify commissioning in multi-device environments.

MultiTech supports seamless device discovery by presenting connected LoRaWAN® sensors as virtual BACnet devices that fully participate in standard BACnet discovery workflows.

Through MultiTech gateways, these virtual devices respond to discovery requests over BACnet/IP, allowing integrators and facility teams to quickly identify, commission, and manage new sensing points using familiar BMS tools. This standards-aligned approach reduces setup time, minimizes manual configuration, and supports scalable expansion of building automation systems.
